SRI LANKA (DR KANISHKA)
(3rd/4th/5th YEAR VET STUDENTS)
Dr Kanishka works at his own Veterinary Clinic in Dewalapola, Sri Lanka, near to Colombo. He has done extensive work with animal charities giving his free time to aid the street animals and the local people.
WORK WITH DR KANISHKA
This is a surgery based project! Most of you have completed one or two weeks with the Blue Paw Trust. You will work with Dr Kanishka in his clinic meeting the owners and diagnosing the animal’s problem with them.
You will discuss and give the treatments under Dr Kanishka’s supervision. You can castrate and neuter animals that come into the clinic and will also do other operations, sometimes assisting but sometimes alone although all under Dr Kanishka’s supervision. Dr Kanishka will organizeas many operations as possible during your time there
When you first arrive you will discuss with Indira/Dr Kanishka areas you still need practice e.g. spays and they will arrange for these operations for you to practice. Dr Kanishka specializes in surgeries and he does numerous bone pinning surgeries, accident victims and other emergencies such as salivary mucoseal, foot injuries, anal gland abscess etc. You will therefore be exposed to a large number of surgeries on this project. Feel free to discuss your interests and requirements with Dr Kanishka as he wants to help you develop your abilities as a vet.
Please note that this is a BASIC clinic compared to the UK, giving you a totally different experience of what it is like to work in a third world country in a clinic that doesn’t have all the mod cons. For a basic clinic it is incredibly well equipped with an ultrasound machine also. Don’t expect luxury, expect to be challenged and see that life is very different in these circumstances but the animals are still treated very well considering the difficult conditions and with love!
The surgery is open 7 days a week.
•930 – 1300 (which can continue until 1500 depending on amount of work)
•1800 – 2200 (again depending on amount of work)
There are no days off usually if you are there for a week, however, you can discuss with Dr Kanishka if you wish to take some time off or you can stay longer after your project to do the touristy things.
